pre 1.1 beta information

The game has been released, and you should already have at least a version 1.0! This thread is for talking about some of the new updates coming in the future.

1.0.7, currently in beta, fixes a crash bug that would occur after selecting your queen in certain (relatively rare) circumstances. To install the beta 1.0.7, go to Options from the title screen; click on Updates; Select 'Enable' under 'Show beta versions', click 'Check for updates', and upgrade to 1.0.7.

(Other changes between 1.0 and 1.0.7: the 'upgraded from' note on the updater screen will be slightly clearer, and some platform-specific encryption bugs were fixed. The fixes for the crypto bugs should already be in the installers.)

Player-visible changes:

The second sprite set is in. There's an option to switch art sets in the prefs. (Note that the new CGs are not yet in.)
The bug where button focus was lost whenever you selected a scheduler button with the keyboard (or, presumably, game controller) has been fixed.
A crash starting the mole case if Mallory had been the mole, confessed, and then you expelled her fixed.
Once you've beaten the game, you have the option to select the mole at game start.

(Also, to the player getting crashes while trying to upgrade from 0.9.38 - I've been unable to replicate the crash; you probably want a new installer.)

To add a little more detail:

Art Style 2 is now partially available in beta. Switching to style 2 will change the backgrounds, the character sprites, the minion cards (large and small), the photo indicators on your saved games, and the photos in the epilogues. It will not yet change the CGs, because the new CGs are not complete. This is a sizable patch because of all the art to download.

There will be a more informative option control for switching between style 1 and style 2 later. Right now it just says 1 and 2, that's not permanent, there will eventually be a preview showing the difference and letting you pick.

As mentioned, this version now lets you choose who you want the mole to be, as long as you have won the game at least once in the past. This is to make it easier to explore paths you haven't seen before (and hey, it makes my testing life easier too).

Updating doesn't seem to work for me: I've tried from an alpha version I'd downloaded (because); I've downgraded to the previous beta version and, finally, uninstalled the game and reinstalled it to update from that, but I still got an exception. I've uploaded the tracebacks via the game. 'http_exception' is not defined, this happens while checking the files.

I also got an exception when trying to update and uploaded a traceback. Tried updating from the most recent patch. Mine seems to be complaining about not having "game/students.rpcy".

Updating doesn't work for me either.

It seems I have the same issue:
UpdateException: Could not verify download of 'game/students.rpyc'

I've uploaded the traceback.

Ooops, I corrupted the patch while looking for security holes in the updater. (On the plus side, the crashes mean that the potential security hole I was looking for does not actually exist)

Updating to 1.0.10 should work now.

I still can't update. I'm getting a new error.

NameError: name 'http_exception" is not defined

New traceback has been uploaded.

I want those new sprites Spiky!

Hrm. Does updating work if you delete C:\Program Files (x86)\Black Closet\game\cache\1.0.10\ ?

If that doesn't work, try upgrading to alpha 1.0.10.1. (Don't touch 1.0.10.2 when it goes up, I'll be testing various updater-breaking things with it.)

That worked. I'm guessing anyone that tried updating and got the 'game/students.rpyc' error will need to do that before trying to update again.

But I'm all sorted now.

I love the new sprites so much.

I was also able to update after deleting game\cache\1.0.10\. Everything seems a-ok now.

It worked for me as well, thanks!

Glad you like them, I hope the CGs don't disappoint you!

One small UI bug: when Mallory's second sprite is in a cutscene that can be skipped (like at the beginning), her hand overlaps with the 'Skip' button. It still works, but it looks a bit untidy and might be confusing to some, since her hand covers it almost completely.

If you never even got your version up to the actually-released 1.0, you need a new installer rather than trying to update from way back in early alpha. Uninstall what you've got and delete any remaining files, then email me your receipt to get a fresh installer email.
