I CAN NOT get this game to work

I purchased this game and have spent the last hour trying to get it to work. I didn't know it wasn't supposed to load in widescreen, I picked OpenGL like everyone on the Internet says and now the game WILL NOT load more than the title screen no matter what I do.

I have done everything this page tells me to and nothing does anything. All I wanted to do was go home and play this game and instead I've spent an hour troubleshooting and getting nowhere. I keep uninstalling and reinstalling the game and NOTHING WORKS

Can you please fix the game so clicking OpenGL doesn't turn it into a dead file? I don't think that's so much to ask.

Where exactly did 'everyone' on the internet say to pick openGL (so I can yell at them)? OpenGL is the thing MOST LIKELY to cause your game to break very, very hard. The vast majority of our support posts are telling people how to get OUT of opengl. If your game auto-defaulted to not using openGL, there was probably a very good reason.

(Also, the game is designed 1024x600 - it IS widescreen. Unless I'm misunderstanding the question?)

Hold down shift while you launch the game to bring up the graphics menu and switch back to software rendering. We'll look at your posted details, but it's probably not going to work in OpenGL on your machine without a different card or drivers.

A bunch of people said to use OpenGL on the Steam forums, so maybe not literally everyone.

I've tried holding shift as best as I can, I guess, but I have the game on my PC, which is built for Big Picture mode and hooked up to my TV. I actually don't own a keyboard.

Ah, you're the guy with the Steam problem! I swear we are currently investigating a fix, it's just a little tricky because, well, there aren't a lot of people with that particular configuration. :)

We've got a dev steambox to play with and we're trying to see what we can do. What sort of computer setup are you using, anyway? I didn't think steamboxes were out in the public. Do you have something running SteamOS? Something else?

I'm on Windows 8. I have a Core i7 and a good bit of RAM but no video card (it's coming soon enough. I know this sounds unusual)

I have an Xbone controller attached, if that helps.

(While I assume you saw it on the Steam forum already, pasting here as well in case anyone else has the same problem)

If you're using Windows and can access the filesystem on your computer, then you may be able to fix it with the following steps: first, select the beta version 'alpha'. Let the game update (verify files to force it, if needed) Then navigate to the directory the game's installed in and run the 'Play in Software Mode' batch file, which should start in software mode. Then you can go to the preferences and set it back to auto or software. (Don't use 'Play in Safe Mode' unless you have a mouse, as it disables controllers.)

Also, there's a pretty good chance that installing the new video card will fix it.
