Students per room? And Houses?

I didn't find answer to this, so let's put question here:
As far I have figured out, dorms are divided into Houses, with Wolves living with other Wolves and Falcons with other Falcons etc. From game it seems that there are usually 2 students per room, except incase of Mary Sue and her roommates. With your roommate(s) you go through final exam.
Is 3-per-room case of odd number of students, or are there actually other such rooms beside our heroine's in Horse Hall? And if the students are divided between houses for their characterics, does that mean there would be lot more Butterflies than there are Snakes, for example? Afterall they couldn't possibly truly be that evenly numbered...
And in case your roommate gets expelled, does that mean you have to go alone in final exam or do you get new roommate(s)? It hardly seems fair to have go through exam alone where others can go with team of three. And clearly some students does always stop going school...
